From heirlooms to modern crosses
Roses do have a lot to contend with here in the humid South. Two of the most common fungus issues are mildew and black spot. There are also some bothersome insects, such as aphids, loopers, Japanese beetles, grasshoppers, sawflies, and thrips, to name a few. They're also popular with deer and chipmunks. It's all about managing your expectations when it comes to growing roses. Without a lot of spraying, giant flowers with perfect petals, no holes in the leaves, and a highpoint bud are impossible to achieve. Many gardeners may prefer not to go this route.
There are many roses that will thrive in our hot, humid, bug-infested gardens. Before the co-ops carried rose spray, antique roses (like the ones our grandmothers grew) were grown in gardens. Not only do these roses have better disease resistance, but they also have more beautiful blooms, a lovely fragrance, and a more natural shape than modern roses. However, many rose breeders now select roses based on their performance rather than their bud size. That means we have modern roses with some of the characteristics of the tough ones our forefathers adored. Choosing a rose based on the situation and need is frequently the best option. Here is a list of tried-and-true roses that thrive in containers. However, many rose breeders now select roses based on their performance rather than their bud size. Souvenir de la Malmaison |
‘Souvenir de la Malmaison’ bourbon rose
The large, fully double flowers of this rose are pale pink and simply stunning. Although there will be some black spots, the flowers are so beautiful that we believe it is worthwhile. The best deterrents for fungal leaf disease are regular fertilization and plenty of sunlight.

Lamarque |
‘Lamarque’ climbing rose
This rose is a climber with lovely white flowers. The blooms are fully double, bright white with a touch of yellow in the center, and delightfully fragrant. The canes appear thin and delicate, but the rose itself is a strong grower. Mildew can form, but with a little pruning and fertilizer, it can be remedied.

‘Lafter’ hybrid tea rose
The orange, yellow, and pink double flowers of 'Lafter,' which bloom on relatively long stems, make this shrub an excellent cutting rose. Its glossy dark green foliage makes it appealing even without flowers, though it is usually in bloom.
